The Capital Grille

Me: Hello, Mr. Haribo Mule

Mr. HM: Hi

Me: Steak dinner in NYC?

Mr. HM: Why yes, of course.

Me: Capital Grille in Midtown?

Mr. HM: Sounds good.

And that's how it usually goes when Mr. Haribo Mule comes into town.

First up, some shrimp cocktail to share. Not huge by steak house standards at all. But the taste was decent.

Del Frisco's

It seems like steak has become the meal to celebrate good news. And good news it certainly was. With The Feisty Foodie and Dessert Zombie, we gathered to wish her good luck on her new job. And what better way to congratulate her than with big pieces of charred meat. Oh yeah. You know you want it.

To start, we had the off the menu slab bacon ($6 each). This is no ordinary diner bacon. This is a thick slab cooked to order. Be careful though. All that bacon means extra salt. All that salt means thirst and downing hard alcohol to quench it. Ahem ahem...

Restaurant Week: Fogo de Chao

I thought about writing a more lengthy post about my Restaurant Week experience at Fogo de Chao. But really there's not much else to say than, it was not good.

Marea

It has been too long since I've last been to Marea. As a big fan of Chef Michael White's restaurants, I really should revisit many of his establishments. The problem is that he keeps opening up more places! How can I balance it all out?

A few months ago, my family and I went out to Marea to celebrate the boys' birthdays as well as Mother's Day. It was an all in one celebration! And was I excited when we decided to go to Marea? Oh heck yes!

The decor remains were beautiful as ever while the tone of the restaurant was bustling with conversation. Service was smooth and attentive as usual. And now the food. The meal started with an amuse bouche of smoked trout and marscapone cheese profiteroles. Little bites of smokey, creamy fish. It tasted rich and lightly of the sea. A really nice savory start to the meal.

Quality Meats

Another wonderful visit from Mr. Haribo Mule. And you know what that means...STEAK! This time we went to Quality Meats.

We started off the meal with an amuse bouche of radishes with butter. A spicy, fresh kick.

Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns

Awhile ago, my good friend and I went out to lunch. He's a big fan of Asian cuisine so I suggested we try out Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns which opened not too far away from the office. We left a bit early in hopes of scoring a table. And we were happy that we did. Shortly after we sat down, the line was long with people waiting outside.

As true to any "authentic" Asian restaurant, service to brisk and to the point. You won't have people asking you how you are today. Instead, they want your order and will serve you right away. Hey, I wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible too. This wasn't a day to spend 2 hours at leisurely lunch.

So I ordered a bowl of the house special ramen ($11.50) to start. It's not Japanese ramen but instead a Chinese version of noodles in soup which came with shrimp, beef, egg, and bok choy. The bowl is regular sized and warmed me. I was happy with this simple dish.

Uncle Jack's Steakhouse

Sometimes you don't need a reason to have a steak dinner. It's really a reason to say, "Why not?". And so Mr. M&P, Ms. Pastry Chef, and I headed out to Uncle Jack's to stuff our faces with delicious beefy goodness. Let's the bovine parade begin.

To start, we tried the Kobe meatballs ($15) which come 4 to a dish. I don't know why they put a Japan flag on there because it was clearly American Kobe. Anyway, tender meatballs in a thick wine sauce. It tasted good but I always feel that kobe or even rib eye is lost when ground up. No need for the marbling of fat within the meat. You can just add fat to the grinder with leaner meat. Personally, I'd say skip.
